We offer products that are certified to independent, third-party standards to provide our customers an additional level of assurance of the responsible way our products are made.

Independent, Third-Party Standard Certifications

All of Domtar’s pulp and paper facilities are certified to the standards of the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®), Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI®), and/or Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC). In addition, Domtar’s owned and managed lands in Canada are certified to the FSC and SFI standards. Where available, Domtar has a preference for FSC Certification. In addition to FSC, Domtar recognizes and utilizes fiber certified to SFI, PEFC, and ATFS standards.

Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®)

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) promotes environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable management of the world's working forests through the development of forest management standards. FSC certification has become the gold standard by which responsible forestry is judged, and is the recognized choice of over 85 leading environmental groups worldwide.

Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI®)

SFI® is an independent, not-for-profit forest and paper certification program that integrates the perpetual growing and harvesting of trees with the preservation of wildlife, plants, soil, water, and air quality. In order to be certified, participants in the SFI program must undergo a thorough, third-party review of their operations. SFI has two on-product label types:

  • Percent Certified Content Labels (Chain of Custody)
  • Certified Sourcing Labels
All Domtar-manufactured paper meets SFI Certified Sourcing standards.

Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC)

PEFC is an independent, not-for-profit, non-governmental organization that promotes an internationally credible framework for forest schemes and initiatives. It does not have its own standard but rather endorses systems it considers credible, including SFI and CSA.

EU Eco-Label

Established in 1992 by the European Commission, the EU Eco-Label is a voluntary ecolabel scheme that was developed by various scientists, NGOs and stakeholders to develop a transparent way to allow consumers to make environmentally responsible choices. The EU Eco-label aims to certify products whose manufacturing processes help to reduce their environmental impacts across the entire lifecycle of the product. Currently, Domtar's Windsor, Quebec Mill carries this product designation for selectA4 grades produced at the mill.
