Exploring the World of Pulp and Paper: An Interview with Nawaf Salem, EIT

At Paper Excellence, we believe in fostering the talents of the next generation to shape the future of our industry. Nawaf Salem is one of our emerging talents as an Engineer-In-Training with Paper Excellence at Skookumchuck Mill. Nawaf is an accomplished mechanical engineer with a strong academic background and a passion for sustainability.

Nawaf’s academic journey begun with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from King Faisal University in Saudi Arabia. This foundation provided him with fundamental knowledge and skills in mechanical engineering principles and practices.

He continued his education and completed his Master of Science (MSc) degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alberta. During his graduate studies, he delved deep into the world of mechanical engineering, conducting in-depth research and developing a thesis focused on the development of a novel piping system. This system has the potential to significantly reduce energy losses and greenhouse gas emissions, aligning perfectly with Paper Excellence’s commitment to sustainability.

Nawaf’s academic background provided him with a strong knowledge foundation in the pulp and paper industry. However, he shared his positive surprise at experiencing the practical implementation of these technologies and practices in the mill, along with the mill’s commitment to environmental regulations and compliance.

Nawaf’s decision to enter the pulp and paper industry was fueled by several compelling factors. “Canada has globally been a leading producer of pulp and paper products. The country possesses vast forests that provide a renewable and sustainable source of raw materials for the pulp and paper industry. This recourse abundance gives the industry a competitive advantage in terms of reliable access to wood fibre,” said Salem.

He also emphasized the industry’s significant efforts to improve sustainability and reduce environmental impacts. Paper Excellence mills are at the forefront of sustainable practices, from responsible sourcing of raw materials to the adoption of energy-efficient technologies.

“I am working on a project that involves inspecting and repairing a sodium chlorate FRP tank that was impacted by a fire event,” said Nawaf. This project exemplifies the real-world challenges and problem-solving opportunities that engineers like Nawaf encounter in the pulp and paper industry.

Nawaf is living in Cranbrook, BC, while he works at the mill, and he couldn’t be happier with his surroundings. “I really enjoy living in Cranbrook due to its natural beauty. Cranbrook Is surrounded by stunning natural landscapes, including the Rocky Mountains and Kootenay National Park. I also value the peaceful and serene environment of Cranbrook.”

Nawaf exemplifies the spirit of innovation, sustainability and dedication that defines Paper Excellence. We look forward to witnessing the impact Nawaf will make as he continues to apply his engineering expertise to create a sustainable and prosperous future for our industry.

“I wanted to express my sincere gratitude to Paper Excellence,” he said. “They have provided me with the unparalleled opportunity to target a career development path in the pulp and paper industry and contribute to further extend the success and legacy of Paper Excellence in this sector. I also want to thank them for their unwavering support, leadership and the chance to be a part of this incredible organization.” Stay tuned for more stories of excellence as we spotlight the remarkable individuals who are driving our industry forward.
