We believe the best way to ensure that our forests, manufacturing and distribution operations are managed in a responsible, sustainable and transparent manner is through certification by internationally recognized third-party organizations. Rigorous independent scrutiny ensures integrity in the chain-of-custody from the forest to the market. All of Domtar’s facilities are certified to the standards of the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®), Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI®), and/or Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification™ (PEFC™). Where available, Domtar has a preference for FSC Certification.  In addition to FSC, Domtar recognizes and utilizes fiber certified to SFI, PEFC, and ATFS standards. 

Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®)

The Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) promotes environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable management of the world’s working forests through the development of forest management standards. FSC certification has become the gold standard by which responsible forestry is judged, and is the recognized choice of over 85 leading environmental groups worldwide.

Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI®)

SFI® is an independent, not-for-profit forest and paper certification program that integrates the perpetual growing and harvesting of trees with the preservation of wildlife, plants, soil, water, and air quality. In order to be certified, participants in the SFI program must undergo a thorough, third-party review of their operations. SFI has two on-product label types:

1. Percent Certified Content Labels (Chain of Custody)
2. Certified Sourcing Labels

Programme for the Endorsement of Forest CertificationTM (PEFCTM)

PEFCTM is an independent, not-for-profit, non-governmental organization that promotes an internationally credible framework for forest schemes and initiatives. It does not have its own standard but rather endorses systems it considers credible, including SFI and CSA.

International Standards Organization (ISO, ISO 14000 and ISO 14001)

ISO 14000 refers to a family of voluntary standards and guidance documents to help organizations address environmental issues. ISO is a non-governmental organization established in 1947 and is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. The organization mainly functions to develop voluntary technical standards that aim at making the development, manufacture and supply of goods and services more efficient, safe and clean.

nullUL ECOLOGO

UL ECOLOGO is a voluntary, multi-attribute, lifecycle based environmental certification, certifying products, services, and packaging that demonstrates reduced environmental impact. UL’s ECOLOGO label is held to rigorous third party environmental performance standards.

Established in 1992 by the European Commission, the EU Eco-Label is a voluntary ecolabel scheme that was developed by various scientists, NGOs and stakeholders to develop a transparent way to allow consumers to make environmentally responsible choices. The EU Eco-label aims to certify products whose manufacturing processes help to reduce their environmental impacts across the entire lifecycle of the product.
